Urgent Call to Action: Contact U.S. Senators about Federal Funds for Workforce Development

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) provides essential funding for workforce development programs, including the Workforce Council’s budget, the OMJ Center, and youth initiatives. Recently, the House passed the A Stronger Workforce for America Act (ASWA) with bipartisan support. This bill represents the first major update to WIOA in a decade, and now it is up to the Senate HELP Committee to review and release their version by the end of May.

Why Your Voice Matters:

Organizations like the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) and the Ohio Workforce Association (OWA) are advocating for local workforce boards, but they need grassroots support to ensure the Senate’s version of the bill meets the needs of employers and job seekers.

Sample Message to Senators:
“The Senate has an opportunity to bring needed improvements to workforce legislation and turn an underfunded system into one that is flexible and adequately resourced. This will enable local workforce boards to better support workers, businesses, and economic development. While the bulk of the House bill, A Stronger Workforce for America Act (ASWA), sets a positive direction, as a Board Member of the Workforce Council of Southwest Ohio I have 3 concerns:

1) The mandate that 50% of funds go directly to training fails to consider the multiple factors that can keep someone from the workforce, like transportation and childcare. The mandate will also hinder our ability to serve businesses. Please allow us the flexibility to direct funds where they’re most needed in our community.

2) ASWA proposes increasing the percent of funds that can be kept by the state, which further hinders our ability to meet local needs. Please leave the percent as it appears in WIOA.

3) A proposed mandate in ASWA directs governors to initiate a redesignation process that can lead to unforeseen problems and limit our ability to serve our community. Please leave the framework as it stands in WIOA.”

Your action is crucial to ensuring that the updated WIOA meets the needs of our local workforce and drives economic growth in Southwest Ohio. Thank you for your support!
